I tried the viral Target bookshelf closet hack

This month, I tackled my closet. Originally, I had no intention of redoing the space so soon, but after scrolling my FYP in January, I couldn't stop seeing videos of the viral Target bookshelf closet hack. After seeing video after video, I knew I had to try it! This hack uses $40 Target bookshelves and other budget friendly Room Essentials pieces to create a custom closet feel without the custom price tag. With the right pieces, a little planning, and a lot of measuring (lol), I was able to create a setup that’s both functional and actually cute to look at all for just under $500!
Obviously, everyone’s closet needs are going to look different. Below are the items I used for my closet, but the possibilities are honestly endless!
I’d recommend measuring your space and having a clear idea of how and what you want to store. For me, the goal was to maximize storage since my previous setup just wasn’t cutting it. I really wanted a dedicated wall for sweatshirts and matching sets, space to hang my clothes by category (long sleeves, short sleeves, etc.), and of course, a spot for all my shoes! I used 4 5 Shelf Bookcases, 4 11" 6 Cube Organizer Shelves, and 3 3 Drawer Modular Dresser Chests:

The hardest part was building everything. But once that’s done all you have to do is piece everything together. I have seen some TikTok videos of people leaving the shelves as is, but if you can, I’d recommend mounting them to the walls to ensure they don’t fall.
I hired my handyman, Nathan, to mount everything to the wall and add trim for a cleaner, built in look! Below is everything he used:
Project Source Closet Rod 96-in L x 1.3125-in H White Metal Closet Rod (If you don’t want to cut the rod, you can use an adjustable rod)
**If you are in the Chicago area and need help with a project, I could not recommend Nathan enough! He has helped me with SO MANY things around my condo and literally outdoes himself on every single one!
Overall, this project cost me just under $500 for the materials from Target! (I reused two cube units I already had to help keep costs down.) I also picked up a few extra organization pieces like hat holders, drawer organizers, and a cute boucle stool from Target to help reach the higher shelves.
If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your closet, I hope this gives you a little inspiration to go for it! You don’t need a huge budget or a full renovation to create a space that feels custom and works for your lifestyle. This makeover completely transformed how I store (and see) my clothes, and I honestly love walking into my closet now. Whether you’re working with a reach-in, walk-in, or something in between, a few well-placed pieces can make a big difference!
